Ms. Boelter's Third Grade
"STARS" for God***** SERVICE, TEAMWORK, and RESPECT
Some Special Third Grade Goals:
. Learn how to summarize an event, story, or book.
. Recognize and learn more about every day heroes who serve and help others
Third Grade Curriculum
I make it point to give my students many daily opportunities to interact in conversation. My goal is to have every child become more comfortable with speaking in front of others. This includes giving their ideas and opinions, sharing what they have learned, explaining how their answers came to be, etc. This verbalization and reasoning things out is an important part of the learning process and relates to all subject areas. It also brings me great pleasure to see my students participating in class plays. Third graders are able to be challenged by reading and memorizing the scripts, and with pretending they are someone or something else on stage. What fun! Additional language arts activities include giving reports, creative writing, journaling, and applying grammar and spelling skills in daily work.
Helpful Hints:
Parents and older siblings can really be of help in the reading process. Encourage your child to be dramatic and to read with expression! Take turns reading parts or pages with your child. Talk about the story. Act out the events from the reading text, or add your own dialogue to add meaning to what is being read. Demonstrate to your child the pleasure one can receive from reading.
Social Studies:
Third grade themes are centered around learning about different communities. This study will include the history, geography, economy, customs and traditions, and unique features of many communities in the U.S. We extend our global study by discussing current events and by reading and discussing articles in students' Scholastic News.
Math:
Students will be able to explore and develop problem solving strategies for the following units of study: Using Place Value & Money, Data & Graphs, Telling Time Concepts, Estimation, Addition & Subtraction Review, Measurement (Customary & Metric), Multiplying and Dividing Using Up to Four Digits by One Digit, and Using Fractions
Math Hint:
A few minutes each day for math facts practice goes a long way in aiding students to complete assignments in less time and with more accuracy. You could make and play a board game, check out websites, and use flash cards to reinfore the facts. You may also wish to have your practice facts using the wesite http://www.mathfactcafe.com/.
Religion: Our Holy Spirit theme this year is "Making a Difference." As a class we will be exploring many ways people can and are helping others in our church and world communities. Our text study will include the following topics: The Holy Spirit Guides Us, The Sacraments, Loving & Praying for Others, The Celebration of Mass, Feasts and Seasons, and The Church Continues the Mission of the Apostles
Science: Students will have an opportunity to be the "Scientist" of the week, or they may choose to be the "Science Reporter" of the week. The third grade main areas of study will be: Life Cycles, Roles of Living Things, Sun, Moon, and Earth, and Forms of Energy
